CRF - Definition
Chronic Renal Failure is coded as a comorbid condition only for any patient who is receiving chronic outpatient dialysis for kidney failure prior to the current hospital admission.
- For newly dialyzed patients use the ARF (Diagnosis) codes instead.
Data Integrity Rules
- See the data integrity check related to this code at "CRF vs ARF, ARI, Renal Transplant".
- if COMORBID coded with CRF (351),then ARF (350), ARI (364) or 352 (ATN),cannot be coded in admit or complications.
- if LOS in ICU or medicine <=3 days and IF comorbid DX is 351, then TISS 52-55 or Medicine TASK item not marked is correct.
(most CRF patient will have dialysis 2-3 times per week, so checking every patient with LOS of <= days who have 351 in comorbid, but nothing on TISS or in TASK, if creating excessive chart checks.
- if Julie would like to comment further.
