Additional Info
- This is a wastebasket code for bone discontinuity problems that are not coded anywhere else. They include:
- Malunion or nonunion of a bone -- these refer to problems with a bone failing to repair itself some time after a fracture (of any cause) occurred. Thus, the fracture is no longer current, but the bone never knitted, or knitted poorly/incorrectly. For these cases, we do not have any coding for the specific bone that failed to knit properly.
- A nontraumatic fracture NOT due to one of the causes shown immediately below. In this case, this is a "go with" code that should be combined with the ICD10 code for the specific bone fractured. For these cases, you should also code the bone fractured.
Alternate ICD10s to consider coding instead or in addition
- Bone, pathologic fracture due to neoplastic disease
- Osteoporosis with new pathologic fracture
- Bone, stress fracture
- Bone, pathologic fracture NOS
- Bone, disorder of bone continuity
