Additional Info
- The parameter for coding hypomagnesemia is the following:
- Mg++ <= 0.41
- NOTE: While some listings of normal ranges for Mg++ are as low as 0.63, nonetheless the rules listed here are what should be used to code hypomagnesemia.
- Main signs and symptoms of hypomagnesemia are:
- neuromuscular - lethargy, weakness, neuromuscular irritability (fasciculations, tremors, tetany)
- GI - anorexia, nausea/vomiting, ileus
- cardiovascular - long QT, AV block, cardiac arrest, increased digoxin sensitivity, arrythmias
- miscellaneous - hypocalcemia, hypokalemia, vertigo
Repeated events
If this happens repeatedly during the same ward or unit stay, only code it the first time it happens, regardless of whether it is an Admit Diagnosis or Acquired Diagnosis, rather than each time it happens. See ICD10 codes only coded the first time for other diagnoses coded this way.
