Respiratory Failure

We don't have a general code for Respiratory Failure. It is not a valid diagnosis and a more specific cause must be entered.

In our Pre-ICD10 coding schema our codes with cause were:

• Respiratory failure 2nd anaphylaxis
• Respiratory failure 2nd to Neuromuscular Disease
• Respiratory failure 2nd to multiple sclerosis

In ICD10 we only make distinction between acute and chronic; causes would be coded as Combined ICD10 codes.

• Respiratory failure (insufficiency) NOS, acute
• Respiratory failure (insufficiency), chronic
• Respiratory failure (insufficiency) NOS, not specified as acute or chronic
