Significance
Mortality is heavily influenced by case mix and severity of illness. Any differences in mortality between units or over time should be examined for differences in patient population first. Other Factors affecting mortality include structural and process-related aspects of care.
Sampling Plan / Procedure
Inclusion Criteria
- 100% of all patients physically present in an unit bed and have a Dispo of one of the following:
- Died - to morgue
- Died - to OR
- Died - to other ICU
Exclusion Criteria
If the patient has a Dispo "Died - *" in more than one location, only the first one is counted. (E.g. for organ donors)
Definition and Derivation
Numerator
Num = Total number of patients who died
Denominator
Denom = Total number of patients
Formula
Unit Mortality (%) = Num / Denom * 100
Data Sources
SAS Program
S:\MED\Med_CCMED\S:\MED\Med_CCMED\Julie\SAS_CFE\CFE_macros\logphiunit.sas
Data Integrity Checks
- Query NDC_dx_implying_death_across_encounters
- Query check ICD10 dx implying death must have appropriate dispo
Data use
