Central line days are taken from Central venous catheter (TISS Item) and CCI Procedure on any type of Central Venous Catheter, except Swan-Ganz (Pulmonary Artery Flotation) Catheter placement

Significance

Critical Care and Infection Prevention and Control Unit track the central lines placements for CLABSI, quality improvement and resource utilization.

Sampling Plan / Procedure

Inclusion Criteria

100% sampling for all patients with central line placements

Exclusion Criteria

Patients without central line placements

Frequency

• Daily recording of dates a patient with central lines
• Total number of ICU patients and ICU days with central lines on a monthly, quarterly or yearly basis based on the daily data.
• Time Reference for month, quarter or year is based on calendar dates

Reported as

• Dates with central lines by patient
• Total patients with central lines and total central line days for a given time frame and site
  • Used as denominator for Central Line Associated Blood-Stream Infection (CLA-BSI) rate

Data Sources

Feb 2008 to Dec 2012

• Daily counting of central lines from sites is being submitted to the Database main office which is being entered and saved by the Data Processor into an access file in S:\MED\MED_CCMED\CCMDB_Special_Projects\Central_Line_Infections_ETube\DATA_ENTRY_LineCounts_ETube\CentralLineswithETtube.mdb

Jan 2013 to Sept 30, 2020

• Daily data for Central lines is taken from Central venous catheter (TISS Item) from the TISS form being marked by ICU bed side nurses and quality checked by the Database Data Collectors.
• T17 - Central venous catheter - any (includes Cordis, PICC, vascath etc.

Starting Oct 1, 2020, the above TISS28 element is collected as part of the CCI Collection.
