All arterial blood gas (ABG) results (FIO2, PO2, CO2, & PH) should be obtained from the same specimen.  Use the PH value from the worst ABG result you have selected for a patient during their first 24 hours in ICU.

The book of data collection guidelines did have the instruction to choose the worst PH independent of the ABG selected for worst O2 (page 88 from Feb 11, 2004)) unless I misinterpreted it.  Regardless, it was usually the same ABG anyway but thank you for the clarification above which states that all results should come from the same ABG.--MWaschuk 11:13, 16 March 2009 (CDT)
*please refer to the WIKI for the most up-to-date collection guide information.  If there is no information on the WIKI or a discrepancy between paper guide and WIKI, let me know and we can continue to work on it. Collector should no longer be using the paper guide since it starting to contain more and more out dated information. --TOstryzniuk 13:52, 16 March 2009 (CDT)

It is an element of the Arterial blood gas (APACHE).

Arterial blood gas (APACHE) instructions

There are special collection instructions for Arterial blood gas (APACHE), refer there for further info.

APACHE Score

This value is used to generate the APACHE Score.

Collecting Apache physiological variables

There are some specific rules to follow in choosing which one of several lab results to collect.

See APACHE physiological variable collection for details.

Cross Chcks

Rules described in APACHE_physiological_variable_collection#Exceptionally_high_or_low_values are implemented by Check APACHE physiological variable high low.

History

There have been different collection practices used when selecting the PH value, the original APACHE II user manual (version 1.0) is as above and that is how it should be collected.
