• Combine this "what was done" code with the code for the body part that underwent occlusion
• AN IMPORTANT EXCEPTION is that if a procedure was done to occlude a blood vessel to control bleeding, then do NOT use this "what was done" code, but instead use Control of Bleeding
  • But use this code as part of component construction of a procedure to occlude a blood vessel that is NOT (yet) bleeding -- e.g. if they embolize a cerebral artery for a growing, but not yet bleeding, cerebral aneurysm.
    • For Esophageal varices not yet bleeding, code the veins draining the esophagus, which for the upper esophagus would be (T) Other Vessels of Head, Neck, Spine, NOS and for the lower esophagus would be (T) Thoracic Vessels, NOS
• To code placement of an IVC filter, you'd combine this component with (T) Vena Cava
• To code closure of a patent ductus arteriosis you combine it with (T) Pulmonary Artery
• The body part can be of a nonvascular structure
  • For example, a radical approach to aspiration is to ligate the trachea and create a "spit fistula" -- you'd code that with two separate CCI codes:
    • (a) for the tracheal ligation combine components (T) Trachea with Occlusion
    • (b) for the spit fistula combine components (T) Trachea with Bypass
  • For example, it can be used to indicate occlusion of other structures (e.g. lacrimal gland duct)
• To code TACE transarterial chemoembolization for liver cancer via femoral artery to block hepatic artery code this with (T) Liver
• use for nerve block for migraine, combine with (T) Cranial Nerves
• embolization, for embolectomy use Extraction, if actively bleeding use Control of Bleeding
• coiling if not actively bleeding, use this with (T) Intracranial Vessels
• Glue for ICH or AVM, combine with (T) Intracranial Vessels
• clipping of cerebral aneurysm, combine with (T) Intracranial Vessels
• To code vessels in stomach, small intestine etc that are NOT (yet) bleeding-- eg use of APC (argon Plasma coagulation), multipolar probes (MPEC), heater probe, epinephrine, sclerosants, or clips, use this code with the appropriate "vessel" code.
• use for stellate ganglion block, combine with (T) Nervous System, NOS
