* It looks like the original Katz ADL uses high scores for good functioning, but our modified one with the intermediate value uses low ones. That isn't intuitive and users of our data might expect otherwise. Am I off in left field on this? If not we should document this explicitly. Ttenbergen 12:32, 24 April 2025 (CDT)

What we collect
What we collect
We collect the following components:
ADL components
* ADL Bathing
see infobox
* ADL Dressing
* ADL Toiletting
* ADL Transfering
* ADL Continence
* ADL Feeding

Scoring
ADL component scores
The individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores, e.g. "ADL_Bathing" might have a value of "unassisted". Filling of the fields is driven by S_ADLOptions table which includes a "sorter" column to make the options show in the desired order in dropdowns, and an "ADL_Score" column that contains the score for the element.
For each of the #ADL Components the individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores. s_ADLOptions table stores the corresponding scores used in the ADL score or the ALERT Scale as follows:
+ For criteria see the pages of the individual elements linked above
Option !! ADL_Score !! ALERT_Score !! Explanation
Major || 6 || 6 || major assistance
Minor || 3 || 3 || minor assistance
Unassisted || 1 || 0 || unassisted / independent

Performance of each of the activities is evaluated as unassisted (0 points), minor assistance (3 points), or major assistance (6 points).
Deviation from Katz's definition
This deviates from the original scoring in Katz' paper:
* they only used 2 options
* they assigned the higher score to the unassisted

Combined ADL Score
The ADL Score is the sum of points of all the six activities.
The ADL Score is the sum of points of all the six activities.

This score is derived from the individual #ADL Components collected following general collection instructions in ADL General Collection Information and component-specific criteria defined on the individual component pages listed below.

How is this derived

What we collect

ADL components

see infobox

ADL component scores

For each of the #ADL Components the individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores. s_ADLOptions table stores the corresponding scores used in the ADL score or the ALERT Scale as follows:

For criteria see the pages of the individual elements linked above
Option ADL_Score ALERT_Score Explanation
Major 6 6 major assistance
Minor 3 3 minor assistance
Unassisted 1 0 unassisted / independent

Deviation from Katz's definition

This deviates from the original scoring in Katz' paper:

 • they only used 2 options
 • they assigned the higher score to the unassisted

Combined ADL Score

The ADL Score is the sum of points of all the six activities.
