* It looks like the original Katz ADL uses high scores for good functioning, but our modified one with the intermediate value uses low ones. That isn't intuitive and users of our data might expect otherwise. Am I off in left field on this? If not we should document this explicitly. Ttenbergen 12:32, 24 April 2025 (CDT)

*** I think the meaning of the data needs to be either right at the top or at least in the how it's derived. People hunt and scan documentation rather than read the whole thing, and I don't thin they would expect the basic definition of an item under data use. The binned reporting you also have down there, that belongs under data use in my opinion, but the info about the raw info should be higher. I have made the change, feel free to tweak to make sure it also makes sense to anyone linking from a report.
** Good eye, Tina. but will it matter 6 to 0 or 0 to 6, if we specify the scores we have used.  I just remember the University grading system  here in Canada, 5 - highest and 1 - worst.  In the Phil the grading system 1-highest and 5 - worst. I have to adjust my brain when I got my first semester grades.

Scoring
ADL component scores
The individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores, e.g. "ADL_Bathing" might have a value of "unassisted". Filling of the fields is driven by S_ADLOptions table which includes a "sorter" column to make the options show in the desired order in dropdowns, and an "ADL_Score" column that contains the score for the element.
For each of the #ADL Components the individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores. s_ADLOptions table stores the corresponding scores used in the ADL score or the ALERT Scale as follows:
+ For criteria see the pages of the individual elements linked above
Option !! ADL_Score !! ALERT_Score !! Explanation
Major || 6 || 6 || major assistance
Minor || 3 || 3 || minor assistance
Unassisted || 1 || unassisted / independent

Performance of each of the activities is evaluated as unassisted (0 points), minor assistance (3 points), or major assistance (6 points).
Deviation from Katz's definition
This deviates from the original scoring in Katz' paper:
* they only used 2 options
* they assigned the higher score to the unassisted

Combined ADL Score
The ADL Score is the sum of points of all the six activities.

ADL component scores

For each of the #ADL Components the individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores. s_ADLOptions table stores the corresponding scores used in the ADL score or the ALERT Scale as follows:

For criteria see the pages of the individual elements linked above

Major 6 6 major assistance
Minor 3 3 minor assistance
Unassisted 1 unassisted / independent
