*AG REPLY --- Starvation ketosis is not much a true problem, even in diabetics.  And it occurs in non-diabetics who don't eat for a prolonged period, as short as a few days.  Thus, it's just another form of metabolic acidosis and you could code it with [[Acidosis, NOS]] }}

This is not a standard ICD10 code but a ICD10 Custom code. We added it for the following reason:
In ICD10 proper, this code would be grouped together with Diabetes mellitus chronic complication NOS which is less specific than we want, or with Diabetic coma which would miss cases that are not severe enough to cause coma, so we added this code.

See Non-standard ICD10 Diagnoses for other codes like this.

Additional Info

  • This entity is sometimes called "Non-ketotic hyperosmolar coma"
  • However, you can have this state WITHOUT coma
  • If you have it WITH coma, then code this AND ALSO Diabetic coma
