- Mg++ < 0.5 OR
- Any Mg++ < 0.8 AND in the presence of signs or symptoms believed to be due to hypomagnesemia OR
- Any Mg++ < 0.8 with active treatment for hypomagnesemia
- Main signs and symptoms of hypomagnesemia are:
- neuromuscular - lethargy, weakness, neuromuscular irritability (fasciculations, tremors, tetany)
- GI - anorexia, nausea/vomiting, ileus
- cardiovascular - long QT, AV block, cardiac arrest, increased digoxin sensitivity, arrythmias
- miscellaneous - hypocalcalemia, hypokalemia, vertigo
