This score is derived from the individual ADL entries collected under ADL General Collection Information.

  • It looks like the original Katz ADL uses high scores for good functioning, but our modified one with the intermediate value uses low ones. That isn't intuitive and users of our data might expect otherwise. Am I off in left field on this? If not we should document this explicitly. Ttenbergen 12:32, 24 April 2025 (CDT)
    • it is documented below under Data Use. we can make it as a separate sub-category if you want it explicit. --JMojica 13:18, 24 April 2025 (CDT)
    • Good eye, Tina. but will it matter 6 to 0 or 0 to 6, if we specify the scores we have used. I just remember the University grading system here in Canada, 5 - highest and 1 - worst. In the Phil the grading system 1-highest and 5 - worst. I have to adjust my brain when I got my first semester grades.

What we collect

We collect the following components:

Scoring

The individual component fields are stored as their full words rather than scores, e.g. "ADL_Bathing" might have a value of "unassisted". Filling of the fields is driven by S_ADLOptions table which includes a "sorter" column to make the options show in the desired order in dropdowns, and an "ADL_Score" column that contains the score for the element.

Performance of each of the activities is evaluated as unassisted (0 points), minor assistance (3 points), or major assistance (6 points).

The ADL Score is the sum of points of all the six activities.
