This page contains an ICD10 Coding Guideline for ICD10 collection. See ICD10 coding guidelines for similar pages. |
There are numerous different codes for iatrogenic problems. It's important to become familiar with the options and choose the right one.
Additional Info
- see Template:ICD10 Guideline Iatrogenic for the information that shows up on every page for an iatrogenic dx code, only additional details should be on this page
- Generally these codes do not need to be combined with another code -- e.g: Iatrogenic, air embolism, as complication of line/infusion/transfusion/injection
Subcategories (types) of iatrogenic codes
These fall into several categories:
- Adverse effects of a drug, medical or biological substance. These codes include some combination of the words "used appropriately", "adverse effect", and "drug-induced". For these dosing was appropriate but the patient had some bad effect.
- Overdose/poisoning by drugs, medical or biological substance. These codes include some combination of the words "overdose/poisoning" and "poisoning/toxic effect". Of course these overdoses/poisoning may or may NOT be iatrogenic -- alternatively they could represent self-harm, or be accidental outside of a healthcare setting.
- Complications of organ transplants. These codes contain some combination of the words "failure or rejection" or "failure or rejection or unspecified complications". Also included here is Graft-versus-host disease/reaction (GVHD)
- Decubitus (pressure) ulcers -- of course these may or may NOT be iatrogenic, i.e. they can occur at home or in a long-term care facility.
- Pneumonia, ventilator-associated (VAP)
- Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in ICD10
- Iatrogenic infections other than HAP and VAP
- Iatrogenic mechanism - complications of devices
- A group of particularly important specific iatrogenic problems:
- Iatrogenic, dehiscence or rupture or disruption, surgical wound NOS
- Iatrogenic, hemorrhage or hematoma, related to a procedure or surgery NOS
- Iatrogenic, hypotension/shock, postoperative/post-procedural
- Iatrogenic, puncture or laceration, related to a procedure or surgery NOS
- Iatrogenic, thromboembolism, as complication of line/infusion/transfusion/injection
- Miscellaneous things, including
- Transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI, form of ARDS)
- Iatrogenic, transfusion reaction (incompatibility reaction) (any type) -- excludes TRALI
- Failed/difficult intubation, or complication of intubation
- Complication associated with artificial fertilization, NOS
- Iatrogenic, malignant hyperthermia, due to anesthesia
- Complication of anesthesia, NOS --- excludes malignant hyperthermia
- Iatrogenic, air embolism, as complication of line/infusion/transfusion/injection
