Subcategories (types) of iatrogenic codes

These fall into several categories:

  • Adverse effects of a drug, medical or biological substance. These codes include some combination of the words "used appropriately", "adverse effect", and "drug-induced". For these dosing was appropriate but the patient had some bad effect.
  • Overdose/poisoning by drugs, medical or biological substance. These codes include some combination of the words "overdose/poisoning" and "poisoning/toxic effect". Of course these overdoses/poisoning may or may NOT be iatrogenic -- alternatively they could represent self-harm, or be accidental outside of a healthcare setting.
  • Complications of organ transplants. These codes contain some combination of the words "failure or rejection" or "failure or rejection or unspecified complications". Also included here is Graft-versus-host disease/reaction (GVHD)
  • Decubitus (pressure) ulcers -- of course these may or may NOT be iatrogenic, i.e. they can occur at home or in a long-term care facility.
  • Pneumonia, ventilator-associated (VAP)
  • Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) in ICD10
  • Iatrogenic infections other than HAP and VAP
  • Iatrogenic mechanism - complications of devices
