Additional Info
This code is NOT intended for the RECIPIENT of the transplant, use CCI Component 2 code Transplant with the appropriate organ for that.
- Organ donors can be dead or alive.
- We only want to code this for major organ donations, i.e. not cornea, skin or bones.
- This code is for the donor, not recepients of transplanted organs.
- For a live donor (e.g. man giving a kidney to his sister) this can be (and virtually always WILL be) an admit diagnosis.
- For a braindead donor, or a DCD (donation after cardiac death = almost dead in ICU but decision made to donate by taking patient or OR, removing life support until dead, then harvest organs) it almost always will be an acquired diagnosis. For those the date of that acquired diagnosis should be.... we still need to decide, see: Deceased patients.

Deceased organ donors
See Guideline for coding organ donation after death; there is no separate code for cadaver donations.

If a braindead person goes to OR to harvest organs, then that procedures, just code this code, even though the code happens after they leave the unit. They do need to be coded for live donors.
- Procure, Harvest, Obtain for Further Use
- Organ donors considered for lung transplants may have a bronchoscopy ((T) Bronchi - Inspection, Exploration (endoscopic)) - code only if applicable
