{{ICD10 Guideline repeated events}}
The following came straight from the old [[Tachyarrythmias]] article. Do they still make sense in the case of fibrillation? Isn't that much more severe? Ttenbergen 22:41, 2017 November 11 (CST)
Code this even if it is not being treated. <!-- in the old coding schema this was only coded if treated -->
*AG -- I thought I already answered this.  ICD10 codes are diagnoses.  Not every diagnosis is TREATED.  Thus any prior requirement that to code an arrythmia it needs to be treated is NOT going to go forward in ICD10.  This isn't about ICD10 per se, but rather about the fact that it never made sense to insist that we'd only code a thing if it was treated.  While rare there are some good reasons not to treat tachyarrythmias, not the least of which is palliative status.  THUS TINA -- for any/all arrythmias that say the things below, please remove them.
**TT -- this may be a bigger issue than just arrythmias... did [https://ccmdb.kuality.ca/index.php?title=Special%3ASearch&search=treated&go=Go a search of the wiki for "treated"] and we have other dxs that also list a treatment requirement. Is this a broader problem? Ttenbergen 08:42, 2019 January 24 (CST)
*AG REPLY TO TT:  We should compile and look at the list of ICD10 diagnoses which require treatment to qualify.

Repeated events

If this happens repeatedly during the same ward or unit stay, only code it the first time it happens, regardless of whether it is an Admit Diagnosis or Acquired Diagnosis, rather than each time it happens. See ICD10 codes only coded the first time for other diagnoses coded this way.

Example:
  • A person has a self-limited episode of A-fib. It goes away and then recurs. Only code the first one.
  • A person has a self-limited episode of A-fib. It goes away but then he has an episode of V-tach. As this is a different diagnosis, both of these should be listed, but only code once each.
  • Patient comes in with hypokalemia. It’s treated and remits, but the next day it recurs. Only code the first time.

Code this even if it is not being treated.

For ICU

  • Receiving Tx with at least one of
    • defibrillation/cardioversion
    • continuous antiarrhythmics infusion
  • bolus Tx does not qualify in Critical Care

For Medicine

(changed 1 Jun 09)

  • new onset with:
    • EKG/Rhythm strip showing tachyarrythmia
    • and receiving drug or electronic treatment for the new onset
