Additional Info
This code is NOT intended for the RECIPIENT of the transplant, use CCI Component 2 code Transplant with the appropriate organ for that.
- Organ donors can be dead or alive.
- We only want to code this for major organ donations, i.e. not cornea, skin or bones.
- For a live donor (e.g. man giving a kidney to his sister) this can be (and virtually always WILL be) an Admit Diagnosis.
Why would it not be an Acquired Diagnosis? They may have been admitted for Preparatory care (incl preop optimization), no? Or would they then not be on a ward where we collect because we are not surgical? |
Deceased organ donors
See Guideline for coding organ donation after death; there is no separate code for cadaver donations.

Related CCI Codes
If a braindead person goes to OR to harvest organs, then that procedures, just code this code, even though the code happens after they leave the unit. They do need to be coded for live donors.
- Procure, Harvest, Obtain for Further Use
- Organ donors considered for lung transplants may have a bronchoscopy ((T) Bronchi - Inspection, Exploration (endoscopic)) - code only if applicable
