Additional Info

Medical Assistance In Dying (MAID) is a program that allows terminally ill patients to access the assistance of a physician to control the time and circumstances of their death. See links under #Program Details for more info.

See Deceased patients#General instructions for deceased patients and Guideline for coding organ donation after death.

Collection Instructions for MAID

  • Code this for patients who are admitted to your ward/unit and either:
    • receive this assistance on the ward/unit
    • receive this assistance during the same admission at your institution but was moved to a separate location (eg. a procedure room/area) for the purpose of receiving MAID
  • Do not code this if the patient simply has a MAID consult, even if they agree to have MAID in the near future. Code it only once the assistance has been provided. If the person is being transferred to another facility (eg. from St. Boniface to HSC), then if it is a location where we collect, the collector of the receiving facility would be the one to code (the collector of the sending facility does NOT code) or if we don't collect there we don't collect it, as we don't collect other things done on other services after pts leave ours.
  • What if the STB patient went to a HSC_ward that is not a collection unit for sole purpose of MAID? (Pam)
    • I updated the above. Does it make sense or should we take it back to task? Frankly I would just take that whole "it will be collected elsewhere" sentence out, I think it confuses the situation, and it is not helpful since it is the same for MAID as for everything else - if it goes to one of ours we will collect it there, and if it doesn't go to one of ours we won't collect it - why do we need to state that at all? Legacy info

  • When we started out this dx used code U23, but then as of 2018-07-17 ICD10 actually added a code for this so we changed ours to that code. I don't really think we are interested in keeping that very early test data, so this comment can probably just go, and we can delete them. I am removing the code from our s_ICD10 table.
