Additional Info
- This code just addresses a dehiscence or disruption of the wound itself. Must code any wound infection separately.
- Includes skin, and also dehiscences of internal suture lines (e.g. bowel anastamosis), and includes an anastomatic leak if present with such a dehiscence, rupture or disruption.
- This is one of a number of different types of iatrogenic injury codes. Here is information about all of them; Iatrogenic codes in ICD10
- Do NOT use this code when a wound closure itself is INTACT (e.g. sutures, staples, etc all in place as they should be), but there is copious drainage from it (e.g. between the staples).
- For such a problem, use the "wastebasket code" Iatrogenic problem NOS, related to a surgery or procedure, NOS
Alternate ICD10s to consider coding instead or in addition
- Iatrogenic, infection, following a procedure or surgery, NOS -- which includes surgical site/wound infection
- Infection of skin or subcutaneous (soft) tissue, NOS
Candidate Combined ICD10 codes
