Additional Info

• Refers to efforts to drain or evacuate either abnormal fluid, clot, pus, etc. and eliminates the fluid from the body
  • forming a colostomy is not drainage because stool is not an abnormal fluid, code as Bypass)
• The method of drainage can be anything: open surgical, percutaneous, etc.

Includes

• • VP shunt (ventriculoperitoneal shunt) - combine (T) Brain's Meninges, Dura, Subarachnoid, Ventricles and Drainage, Evacuation
  • Pericardiocentesis and/or creation of a pericardial window combine with (T) Pericardium or (D) Pericardium, pericardium as in the case of tamponade
  • Abscess drainage -- or incision & drainage (I&D)
  • Drainage of a collection of blood or evacuation of a blood clot (e.g. in the head) combine with (T) Brain's Meninges, Dura, Subarachnoid, Ventricles If the evacuation is done to decompress the Brain, also code (T) Brain with Release, Decompression
  • Drainage of fluid -- e.g. from a joint
    • This applies to a therapeutic joint tap -- Diagnostic joint taps are listed as Arthrocentesis, diagnostic in the quick pick list
  • Paracentesis when done for therapeutic reasons, combine with (T) Abdominal, Pelvic or Peritoneal Cavity, NOS, (use Paracentesis (diagnostic) for diagnostic ones)

Excludes

• Drains that are left in (The first insertion and drainage should be captured) and emptied periodically:
  • Peritoneal drain for ascites
  • pericardial drain
  • EVD
  • Pleurex
  • Nephrostomy tubes
