• The most important distinction here is whether there was purely a Thoracentesis (diagnostic) or a therapeutic drainage done.
  • As per the rules for procedures, when at the same sitting there was a diagnostic procedure AND a therapeutic one, you code BOTH.
    • So if a chest tube is inserted and some of that fluid is sent off for diagnostic testing, then also code Thoracentesis (diagnostic)
