- (1) If patient comes into hospital, from home or a chronic care facility where he/she is on the ventilator, then use this code in the diagnosis bin of "comorbids". So, it follows that if the patient comes to you on a ventilator from any acute care facility (including IICU) you do NOT use this code.
- (2) If a patient who previously was not on chronic MV leaves the hospital to go to home or a chronic care facility on the ventilator, use this code in the diagnosis bin of "acquired in hospital". So, it follows that if the patient leaves on a ventilator to go to another acute care facility (including IICU) you do NOT use this code.
- Also code cause if known
- Do NOT use this code for "Failure to wean" -- that is not a valid ICD10 diagnosis. Code the type of respiratory failure present (acute, chronic, NOS).
