Additional Info
- The most important distinction here is whether there was purely a Thoracentesis (diagnostic) or a therapeutic drainage done.
- As per the rules for procedures, when at the same sitting there was a diagnostic procedure AND a therapeutic one, you code BOTH.
- So if a chest tube is inserted and some of that fluid is sent off for diagnostic testing, then also code Thoracentesis (diagnostic)
- As per the rules for procedures, when at the same sitting there was a diagnostic procedure AND a therapeutic one, you code BOTH.
Includes
- pigtail catheter
- pleurx catheter drain
Excludes
- There could be an unusual circumstance where a therapeutic drainage is done WITHOUT a tube being left in place, in which case instead of this code, you'd use components:
Collecting "CCI collect first" items
- "CCI collect first" items are entered the first time they happen
- Px Date
- if an Acquired Procedure, enter them with the Px Date of the first time they happen
- if an Admit Procedure leave the date blank and just enter the procedure
- Px Count is always 1 for this collection mode
Px Date for patients who move
See Px Date#Moves
Alternate CCIs to consider coding instead or in addition
