For Medicine, see Definition of a Medicine Service admission

The definition of an "ICU patient" for the Regional ICU Database is:

  • admitted under an ICU/CCU/CICU service attending physician to an ICU/CCU/CICU bed. If patient doesn't meet this definition then we don't collect data and enter into the ICU database.

For ICU patients collection starts at unit Arrive DtTm

Special cases

We don't include dialysis-only admissions

  • If the patient is admitted under the care of the ICU Attending, then they should be entered into our database as an ICU admission.
  • If admitted for an acute reason for dialysis (e.g. CHF, hyperkalemia), then code the reason(s), but do NOT use this code.
  • If they're admitted to the service for dialysis and do NOT have an acute indication/need for it, then use this code.
  • This is what the ICU program has advised.--TOstryzniuk 14:54, 27 April 2011 (CDT)

Short Stay

We used to exclude short stay patients (e.g. resuscitation failed and patient died after a few minutes in ICU). As of October 24, 2011 all patients that arrive in the ICU in the process of resuscitation should be included in the database, even if they are there for a short lenght of time and subsequently pass away. This has been recommended by the Task Team and approved by p:Dr. Dan Roberts from the Steering Committee.
