Additional Info

This is not a standard ICD10 code but a ICD10 Custom code. We added it for the following reason:
We needed to track some pathogens that do not have a specific ICD10 code.

See Non-standard ICD10 Diagnoses for other codes like this.

  • This is the "pathogen code" to use when there is a presumed infection and the organism is unknown. This occurs for any of the following possible reasons:
    • No cultures were sent or resulted
    • Cultures were sent but they were negative (negative cultures) or the lab reports "normal flora" or "mixed normal flora"
    • As the bug for any of the sepsis codes, in the presence of MORE THAN ONE specific infection (e.g. pneumonia and UTI) having DIFFERENT bugs.
  • When the pathogen was isolated and therefore is known, but it is not in our list of specific pathogens, then use one or another of the following:
    • Bacteria, NOS
    • Virus, NOS
    • Fungus or yeast, NOS

When a code in category:potential infection is not an infection, code Not an Infection (ICD10 pathogen alternative) with it instead of this code to satisfy cross-checks.
